Science & Technology Entrepreneurs’ Park (STEP), IIT-KGP helps in start-up ventures with the sole motive of assisting the start-up companies. The motive of STEP at IIT-KGP is also to accelerate the development taking place in the local economies by driving the start-up companies to sustained profitable growth mainly by providing them access to funds and steering them operationally and strategically to suit there needs. Through its infrastructure, access to funding, provision of value added services and close ties and partnerships with other corporate organizations, STEP successfully provides its entrepreneurs all the assistance they need to encourage innovation and entrepreneurship to help them grow into bigger companies . The development of a supportive and stimulating environment for innovative hi-tech entrepreneurship is encouraged by IIT Kharagpur.

STEP-IIT Kharagpur has two premises - one inside the IIT Campus and the other at Gopali, a village 5 Km away from the IIT Campus. As a matter of fact, more than 100 acres of land has been provided to STEP for promotion rural entrepreneurship based activities by Government of West Bengal. The Gopali area has approximately 30 acres of land having beautiful tea gardens. Most of the agricultural based rural entrepreneurship activities take place at STEP –Gopali. STEP-Gopali strives to be the focal point for efforts to stimulate and support private and public (economically backward) entrepreneurship development in communities through rural based entrepreneurship in and around the entire eastern region. By supporting economically backward entrepreneurs and evaluating as well as facilitating shared learning to them, the center would work to encourage entrepreneurship development as an effective route to building prosperous, dynamic, and sustainable rural economy
